A first hummingbird in Quebec
Our part of Eastern Quebec, where we spend the summer and early fall, is close to the northern edge of the range for ruby-throated hummingbirds.
I've registered sightings on Journey North, but apparently haven't done a blog post about any sightings here (LOTS of those in past years in the Carolinas).
I was delighted to see a female out the kitchen window this afternoon, investigating the purple lilac which has just begun to flower. Lilacs aren't preferred flowers for hummingbirds, of course, but apparently are visited. There are plenty of black flies at the moment for her to eat. I know from experience as I've started planting my vegetable garden over the last couple of days!
Here's my post on Journey North today for a first sighting. Apparently someone not too far away saw a ruby throat, presumably male in early May!
